Remote Sensing of the Upper Atmosphere

The Palmer station Fabry-Perot interferometer project is funded by the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs. The goal is to study the upper atmosphere and ionosphere over the Antarctica Peninsula. Palmer station is an year-around US Antarctica Research station located on the Anvers Island near the Antarctica Peninsula. It is ideally located for the upper atmosphere research in the region.

During the first phase of the project, the instrument was built at NCAR and deployed in Palmer station, with the support from station staff. The Fabry-Perot interferometer is a remote sensing instrument, which can measure nighttime thermospheric and mesospheric winds and temperatures. These data were lacking in the region. This new instrument provides an important new data set. After the successful deployment, the project entered into the second phase, which involved data collection and analysis. The goal of the this website is to provide information about data from the instrument to potential users. The data are available upon request at moment and will soon be delivered to CEDAR Madrigal database. The data plots contained in the website are for survey purposes only and should not be used for presentation or publication before verifying the results with the instrument PI. This is because the local weather condition can greatly affect the data quality.
