The Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Radar (ISR) is located at (42.617856N, 71.481173W, at 146.005 m above mean sea level), where the magnetic apex latitude is ~53.1magN. Hillstone is located at Haystack Observatory and has been operated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1960. The radar frequency is operated between 440.0 and 440.4 MHz (0.681 m). The data are located both at the CEDAR Database, with more extensive holdings in the Madrigal Database at http://madrigal.haystack.edu. The values in _nmax and in _profiles to be used in the 2011 GEM-CEDAR Challenge run by the Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) were taken from the Madrigal DB with kindat=13300. This is a special format decided upon during the 2006-2008 workshops at the International Space Science Institute in Bern, Switzerland, to help modelers compare with ISR data. Most ISR observations are taken at varying line-of-sight (LOS) directions which make it hard to compare with models. Zenith observations are easiest to compare with. In kindat=13300 for Millstone Hill, the various directions are fitted with B splines and converted to overhead (vertical LOS) fits every 15 minutes using a specified height grid from 100 to 548 km, where the data below ~120 km are subject to ground clutter problems, etc. The Millstone 13300 values are the uncorrected Ne in log10(m-3), Te, Ti in (K), and the Tn (K) found from the heat balance equation. The error bars in Ti, Te, and Ne are included in _profile. There are no error bars for Tn. Tn values estimated from the MSIS model (instead of the heat balance equations) are not included if all other ISR values are missing at the beginning or end of an observing period (or in data gaps). For the 1011 CEDAR-GEM Challenge, no Tn values are used because Ti548km used here). Thus, the _profile files contain Ne(corr in m-3) where the correction of 0.5*(1+Te/Ti) is used both in the estimate of Ne and also in its error bar. However, the full Ne correction plus the small correction due to the Debye length are made when estimating the foF2 (~Nmax) value using B-splines to the Ne profile (since polynomials behave badly at the top and bottom of the profile). Nmax or NmF2 can be related to foF2 by Nmax(m-3) = foF2^2(MHz)/81e-12 or Nmax(cm-3) = 1.24e+4 foF2^2(MHz) Thus, the _nmax files contain just the 1-dimensional values from kindat=13300 where Nmax(m-3) or NmF2 in calculated from foF2. Other parameters in _nmax are the year, daynumber, month/day, UT (h), glat, glon, hmax (hmF2 in km), foF2 (MHz), and TEC (m-2).
