The Fabry-Perot Interferometer at Resolute Bay, Canada (74.73N, -94.89E, 87 m ASL) has been operated since 2003 by the High Altitude Observatory of the National Center For Atmospheric Research. The apex magnetic coordinates of Resolute Bay at 250 km height in 2004 were (83.1, -39.0) so this is usually in the polar cap. These are observations from the red line (630nm) of atomic oxygen, with a typical emission height peak between 210-300 km. The cloud cover (cc) is in tenths of the sky covered (0=clear, 10 overcast). Even overcast, the temperature is valid, but all winds were set to missing (-32767 or -3276.7 for Wn) for cc>4 (40%). Un is positive eastwards, Vn is positive northwards (or polewards), and Wn is positive upwards. There is a cycle of 5 observation look directions (dir) that take about 25 min, followed by about 35 min of oxygen green line (~96 km) and OH (~89 km) emissions. For the winter season in November-January, there is total darkness and thus 24-h observations. Doppler shifts (winds) are determined from the displacement of the line profile relative to an hourly 'zero wind position'. If an hourly 'zero wind' was significantly different from the nightly median, then the nightly median was used instead for the 'zero wind' and the horizontal and vertical winds were re-calculated. The glat and glon are estimated using an emission height of 250 km, and an elevation angle of 45 degrees. The circumference of a circle at the ground is 6376*2pi/360 = 111.28 km per deg latitude and 2piR(6376km)sin(90-glat) = 40062*cos(74.73=0.2634) = 10552 km / 360 deg = 29.31 km/deglon so 250 km / 29.31km/deglon = 8.53 deg lon. The glat and glon from the 5 directions at Resolute Bay become: 1) Z 74.73N, 94.89W 2) W 74.73N, 103.42W 3) E 74.73N, 86.36W 4) N 76.98N, 94.89W 5) S 72.48N, 94.89W The 'errors' given in the data are uncertainties of measurement, that is the statistically determined effect that noise in the measurement will cause in the final result. This noise is inherent to the signal, since photons obey Bose-Einstein statistics. These uncertainties are 1 sigma uncertainty of the deduced horizontal winds and temperatures. Note that the temperatures are RELATIVE, so their baseline is uncertain, but their variations are good.
