Peter: Re Ray's ONR yr end $$: Art and I will be gone all next week, so thought we should make some progress on this before we leave. We would still like to upgrade the IPX currently in the Cedar analysis rm, and the 2 IPC's up at the ML. We're thinking it may be too early politically and technically to hook up workstations at home, altho we should stay informed about ISDN, scd's connectivity, cable modems, etc. US West has told me that ISDN service should be available to Ray's residence but minimum 4 wks to 4 months for installation. When this becomes more feasible or scd hooks up ISDN, we could try out a workstation at Ray's home. Ray has mentioned interest in improving our video production and display. I know scd has plans to upgrade the FL vis lab, but I'm not sure what their time schedule is. We could probably use a new laser disk before they do anything. I think it would be useful to be able to project a workstation/pc/mac monitor at meetings, esp small groups. I.e., run idl or other app to project movies. SCD graphics has 2 Proxima LCD Panels which use high-intensity overhead projectors. These can be borrowed by anybody at ncar. Carlye said she thought they cost about $9000, but why buy one if they are available thru scd anyway? Apparently Tom Engel has an "In Focus" projector that Caryle though cost $6-7K , but I have not heard back from Tom yet. There will be an increase in visitors, postdocs, new hires, etc over the next year or two. Art and Cindy came up with a dozen names of people connected w/ tiso and/or cedar, many of whom would benefit from a sparc 5 rather than the available IPC,X's. Barb and Ganglu need additional disk for their machines, and I mentioned large monitors for Ray and myself. Did you get the new prices/products from Sun? Are Sparc 5's still the machine to get for upgrades? --Ben
