Subject: Paper and presentation approval
Status: R

Attached are the instructions for gaining approval for UARS papers, presentations, etc. The next forwarded
message indicates we are to start now. My secretary, Judy McMillin, will do the administrative work on
this for me. Please submit the info to her for the papers for the Fall AGU so that I can fulfill the
rules. Judy's email is judy@ryker.space.swri.edu .

Dear Science Team Members:

As was requested at the Florida meeting, here is an electronic
version of the presentation material on the proposed notification
and approval process for studies, presentations, and papers. We
should start using the process now, although a formal agreement
on it will await the next team meeting.

The following items are covered here:
Section A - a brief summary of the approach
Section B - a description of the proposed policy and some issues
Section C - outline of the planned implementation
Section D - a description of the standard E-mail message format
for use in the notification/approval process and the
              list of standard parameter mneumonics
  Section E - a sample E-mail message
  Section F - a sample summary file

Please let me know if you have any problems/questions/etc.

Bob Seals

The Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) experiment on the NASA Upper Atmosphere
Research Satellite (UARS), scheduled for launch in fall 1991, is the
first use of microwave limb sounding from orbit to study Earth's
atmosphere. Primary measurement objectives are ClO (~20-45 km), O3
(~15-80 km), H2O (~15-85 km), temperature (~30-60 km), and pressure
(~30-60 km). The ClO measurement on a global scale by MLS is important
for understanding and monitoring chlorine depletion of stratospheric
ozone. The simultaneous measurements of O3, temperature, and H2O
provide additional information on the stratosphere and mesosphere, and
pressure measurements provide the vertical reference for composition.
All measurements are made continuously at all times of day and night,
including in the presence of polar stratospheric clouds which trigger
   ozone depletion at high latitudes.

What we want to do is go ahead and start using the outlined procedure now
although formal agreement on the specific guidelines will be done at the
next Science Team meeting.

You should go ahead and send in notification for your AGU papers. Basically
you just send in a mail message to SCI on the CDHF following the format
in Section D of my previous mail message. Also Section E provides a
sample using a Joe Waters presentation. If you want to see what is already
in the SCI account, you can do a DIR command on the CDHF account. For
example, DIR PI1$DISK:[SCI.APP] will give a listing of items pertaining
to approved presentations. Let me know if you have any problems.

Let's try this electronic approach and see how it goes. Thanks! Bob Seals
