Dear Dr. Lee: November 15, 2002 This is a letter of reference for Craig Hartsough, who is applying for Assistant Professor of Meteorology at UNC, position #20252. I supervised part of Craig's work here at NCAR/HAO for about 3 years while he was employed as an Associate Scientist (level II). His position was discontinued due to lack of funding. His work for me involved software engineering support for our upper-atmosphere modeling program (primarilly Thermospheric General Circulation Models). Craig did an excellent job maintaining and enhancing a large fortran software package used in post-model processing and visualization. He also developed perl scripts and IDL code in support of the models. Craig was also responsible for assisting many collaborators and scientists in using this software, and providing model results for use in research and publication. His communication with both NCAR and non-NCAR colleagues in this respect was excellent. He was also involved in research and publication here at HAO, albeit under a different supervisor. Craig was very active in "extra-curricular" activities at NCAR, serving on several committees (e.g., the Employees Activity Committee). He helped organize NCAR-wide seasonal parties and related events, often acting as "master of ceremonies" for these events. He served as HAO's representative to NCAR in several capacities, and his communication and good humor were invaluable in these situations. I feel that Craig would make an excellent teacher, judging from his communication skills, enthusiasm, and knowledge. I highly recommend him for this position.
