Performance Appraisal Part B: Performance of Key Activities. Employee: Tom Freestone (Student Assistant II) Supervisor: Ben Foster (hao) Date: 3/26/04 Tom was hired in early June, 2003 to assist in development and maintenance of the tgcm models, post-processors, and related codes. To date he has worked primarilly on an IDL post-processor and visualizer. This is a fairly involved code, designed with a GUI interface, enabling the user to browse and visualize model results from netcdf histories. Tom has done an excellent job improving and adding new features to the tgcmproc IDL processor. Among other things, he has added new projections to the mapping procedure (e.g., satellite view projection), fixed numerous bugs (especially related to new versions of IDL as they become available), and an all new plot type which contours fields at ut vs pressure/height. He has also improved the animation capabilities of the code, and is currently adding vector plotting to the mapping procedures. Tom has communicated on a regular bases with scientists and other users in TISO, to assist in the use of the processor, and to solicit their suggestions for new features and capabilities. He has met with me on a regular basis to discuss progress and goals. He is a very reliable and conscientious worker, responsive to suggestions, and willing to work independently while maintaining good communication with the group. Tom will graduate from CU this year, so he will be leaving his position with us as student assistant at that time. I have enjoyed working with Tom, and wish him the best of luck in future endeavors. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Ben Foster High Altitude Observatory (HAO) foster@ucar.edu phone: 303-497-1595 fax: 303-497-1589 Nat.
